NOT CORRECTED More Parking Spaces?
By: Samantha Juhasz

Should there be more parking spaces at school? This is a question The Patriot has asked students around school. Students have been complaining about not enough parking areas. In fact some students have parked on the grass.
About twenty-five seniors who polled believed there should be more spaces. Less than twenty-five sophomores and juniors had also agreed.
If students work together and find a way to raise money for JDHS, there could be a possibility of a crew parking lot or an extension.
One junior had said "I think that there should be more parking spaces at school because, even though I don't drive this year, next year I will be. I would not want to come to school a half hour early just to get a parking spot. That's not right."

Share yourself!
By: Anna Mandzhiyeva

One of the most satisfying and useful parts of life is supporting and sharing oneself with other people who really need the attention, help and care. Volunteer activities are a great contribution to community life. They show maturity and reflect positive attitude towards the world. Volunteers make lots of friends and learn what " friendship" means.
The feeling of satisfaction that the life of at least one person has improved is worth all the time and efforts required.
There are many different opportunities for students to be involved in community service. Skyline Middle School participates in HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed), a nationally recognized mentoring program using students as mentors. The goal of the program is to help develop language skills for students who have difficulties. It is a fulfilling experience both for mentors and students who discover and learn many different things from communicating with each other. Participating in HOSTS as a mentor is also of great value for those who are thinking about a future career in the field of education.
Another great opportunity to work with kids of a younger age is the nation-wide "Read Aloud" program. Volunteers in "Read Aloud" read to preschool-age children in childcare centers.
The Green Circle Program also accepts volunteers to help kids from kindergartens up to the Fifth grade to resolve conflict and reduce prejudice through debates and discussions.
These opportunities are just a few of many volunteering options. Interested students should ask for further details in the guidance office.
