The Kooky
World of
Physics
By:
Amber Batool
This year, another addition
to the Dickinson science department is
Mr. Kook, our new physics teacher. He was
born in Ohio: "The Ohio state that
is round around the edges and hi in the
middle," he quipped. He attended the
University of Delaware and majored in
physics. Before he began teaching full-
time, Mr. Kook was a substitute teacher.
He has been teaching for five years now;
he taught three years at Christiana High
School and one year at Wilmington High
School before coming to JDHS. When asked
if he likes working here, he replied,
"It's O.K; it's a place to hang my
hat."
When he was in seventh grade, Mr. Kook
knew that he wanted to be a teacher.
According to him, " A spoon is a
spoon, and you can't have a knife doing
the job of a spoon." During high
school, he taught his homeroom class, and
he knew for sure that teaching for him.
He likes physics because "physics
tries to answer the question of 'why,'
and it's my favorite subject." He
tries to make physics fun for his
students. When asked what he expects from
his students, he pointed to a sign
saying, "THINK," and said,
"That's my style of teaching; I
wants kids to think."
His last name and its correct
pronunciation have been a topic of
discussion since September. He explained
that when his great-great grandparents
came to America they liked the name Cook,
but also wanted to keep the first initial
of their name, "K." It became
"Kook", but it is still
pronounced like "Cook."
Mr. Kook is the Science Olympiad advisor
this year, and he has also started
